Mission to Earth

1)Using “Mission to Earth” as an example, note what is new or different about digital cinema compared to traditional filmmaking? Consider the story and appearance of the film.
Traditional film making usually has a clear flow of the story, with lots of conversation. From the "Mission to Earth", it much depends on the narration, and no conversation at all. The flow of "Mission to Earth" is not clear. It's hard to read the story without the narration.

Unlike traditional filmmaking, digital cinema can depend more on the technology."Mission to Earth" uses a kind of software to "controls the screen layout, the number of windows and their content".(1) With using the software, the author can select the scenes randomly and chop as many numbers of scenes as he can, then arranging the order as what he wishes to.
As "Mission to Earth" only has narrations, this also helps cutting the scenes into different parts not in a strange way. Traditional films have lots of conversation. As a result, if we chop into different parts, the conversation may become strange, and become another story. For "Mission to Earth", without conversation and the director adds narrations in further stage.

Digital cinema uses computer to create artificial effects, and repeats the same patterns. However, traditional cinema adds less computer-artificial effects. Traditional ones only use computer to add the special effects, like 3D effect, background, but these cannot become the major scenes like what digital cinema does.

2) What other art forms (eg film, digital art, painting, websites etc) does this film remind you of? Explain the similarity.
This film reminds me digital art, as the film creates some scenes that look like the wallpaper with repeated patterns. Also, it makes me think of Youtube, or similar video website. The screen of the video for both”Mssion to Earth” and Youtube is not located at the center. Near the screen, there are some little rectangular pictures in the sides.

Wikipedia

Proprietary Encyclopaedias and Wikipedia are the most common "knowledge advisors". If I need to choose  from two, i would like to choose to use Wikipedia.

First of all, Wikipedia is free of charge. We need not pay for service charge, not annual fee for the company. We need not to be the members of Wikipedia, still we can enjoy using the services provided by Wikipedia, which other proprietary encyclopaedias cannot serve you without collecting charges.

Many people worry about the accuracy of the information that is given by Wikipedia. people are afraid of getting wrong information from free open source as they don't employ professionals to do the editing work. Indeed, Wikipedia doesn't employ any professionals to take up this job. All the information is given by its members in voluntary base. We don't know their education background. However, we need not worry about that as it has also a group of volunteers who do the check up work and vote if the information has problems.Besides, there are lists of rules that the Wikipedia's editors  need to follow before publishing any articles in the web. Furthermore, the editors also put reference links in their essays to support their points. So there is no way to worry about the accuracy of the information in Wikipedia.

Wikipedia can provide a more neutral idea or information. Why i say so? It's because the whole community can do the checkup and response work. The proprietary encyclopaedias are edited by few group of people who are professionals, however, Wikipedia's information is written by all people and is checked and edited by others if they find any mistakes or untruth in the passages from anywhere of the world.

Last but not least, Wikipedia has more languages to choose than propritary enclopaedias. More 40 languages can be chosen to read as the editors are worldwide, while for the proprietary enclopaedias, as they need to pay for profeesional to write the texts, as a result, less people can use the information in their own language and waste time to do the translation.

As Wikipedia is free, neutral and worldwide to choose, I would like to use Wikipedia.

Modern (Digital) Times

1. What are the benefits of the new technologies (industrial machinery, feeding machine, closed circuit cameras) shown in the film? Who gains from these technologies?
The new technologies helps do the things faster. For example, the industrial machinery helps the workers do the work more quickily and efficient; feeding machine helps eating without using hands; closed circuit cameras can see which parts of the machines have problems. From these technologies, workers are not the ones who gain most, but the industry boss does. With efficient and fast production, the boss can sell more products and goods to the market.

2. What is the effect of these technologies on the main character’s life/mood/body?
With repeating of the same work, the main character cannot stop himself away from the action that he does in the factory. Whenever he sees button-like things, he starts to do the same things of what he does during working time, like woman's skirts. He repeats and repeats, making himself go mad, crazy, finally he takes revenge to the factory boss.

3. What effects does using computers and the internet have on your life/mood/body?

It's efficient and convenient to use computer chatting with people, especially friends that have gone to overseas to continue their study. We no longer need to go to library and search for information  for our presentation or essay assignment. We can do this everywhere by typing few keywords in the interent and a list of links comes out for us to select.Teachers and professors put the class notes or references in the net, so this also saves the class time. With the help of internet, the information can flow fast worldwide. The computer can help us organize the work in a tidy and organized way.

Although computer brings us so many benefits, it still has side-effects. People start wasting time by spending so much time searching in the net, or playing computer games. It also creates crimes. Hackers collect personal information from others' computers and use them illegally, like stealing $$$ by entering their bank accounts and passwords. Cyber-bullying is another issue that becomes an other important issues. People type hateful words in someone's blog that they hate most, causing stress, sadness or other bad effects to them. Furthermore, the information is not totally relevant related to what we need for our projects. We need to select carefully.
